Aluminium tubing is a durable, lightweight and corrosion resistant hollow material available in various shapes including round, square and rectangular forms.
It’s valued for:
Suitable for general mandrel bending and tube rolling requirements; commonly used aluminium tubing grades include 6063T6 and 6082T6. They can be finished via anodising, powder coating and/or metal polishing.
The “T” designation refers to the “temper” of the material, i.e. the hardness to which the tubing is produced. The lower the “T” designation, the softer the temper and the greater ductility. In general, both 6063 and 6082 specifications are commercially produced to a T6 temper.
Should a more ductile specification be required, for example in connection with very tight radii mandrel bending requirements, then 6063 tubing in a T4 condition may be necessary. For applications where mandrel bending is not required, 6082 specification material is more applicable as it has a greater tensile strength.
As a general comparison, based on volume, aluminium tube is approximately 3 times lighter than steel tubing. However, when designing the product/application, consideration regarding the required tensile strength should be given as aluminium tubing is approximately 4 times weaker – both materials have the same outside diameter and wall thicknesses.
